Politically Correct Bandwagoners almost ruined Lady Mormont

For me at least, I was completely loving the character, she was tough, smart (even to the point of listening to her advisers) she knew what she knew and had trusted people to advise her on what she didn't know. Her house represented power which gave weight to her words, and the actress (hats off to her) played it perfectly. Another great character from an amazing show.

I looked forward to every time she was involved, her input was always appropriate and well weighted, and nothing seemed to phase her or bend her moral standing. (Maybe a Ned Stark parallel).

Then an article / post came up on my timeline about how brave it was in this day and age, and how much of a statement it was to have a little girl being this important or powerful a character - it destroyed the character in my mind. She's no longer a good character in a great show now she's a "Statement". I never once thought anything of gender in this show, a good character is a good character regardless of race or gender and they only enrich good storytelling.

It's not even the first young character of power the show has ever had, every King to sit on the Iron throne since Robert Baratheon has been around her age bracket. And don't get me started on powerful women, Daenerys Targaryen, Brienne of Tarth, Cersei Lannister, Catelyn Stark, Asha Greyjoy, and recently Sansa Stark has come into her own. And lets not forget there's already been a tough little girl on the show since the first episode -   Arya Stark, yeah Arya may not have the weight to her words as Lady Mormont or the influence over people but she is still a "little girl".

Okay I'll stop ranting, the point is the second she is pointed out as a "statement" it completely took me out of the show, it's meant to be entertainment not a political statement, just like tv shouldn't tell you how to think, but if through good storytelling over time a show changes your perception you won't even notice how you view the world differently.

This show has always focused more on the houses standing for power than men vs women and that's why Lady Mormont works so well, her family's name is what gives her power and her upbringing has taught her how to use that power.

Injustice 2 GAMEPLAY Trailer

Hi Everyone,

Yeah I know, I already posted today, but I just found out the gameplay trailer for Injustice 2 dropped at E3 and oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh it is just one of those trailers that reverts you back to your young teen years and you sit there like "yeah!", "awww sweet", "Oh my god they have *insert character name here*",

For those that haven't yet seen it, here it is in all it's hi def glory...

Ordinarily this would be the bit where I rant about Superman and Batman but (excuse language), Fuck That Shit. The best parts of this trailer are the first appearances. We get to see Grodd, donned in his armour. We see Kara Kent (Supergirl) kicking ass and taking names. We get to see Atrocitus, which Mat was most looking forward to and damn, we are NOT disappointed. The Butcher (the being in the red power battery, if you're a Lantern fan you'll know what I'm trying to say here) looks like it's part of his Special move.

What I didn't expect, and it's a blink and you'll miss it sneaky peaky, is that they have Black Manta in this game. I'll be honest, I was so overwhelmed watching this trailer, I missed him on the first viewing and Mat was the one who was like "shit! did you see they have Manta?!".

That clip at the end though, man I love when they make Aquaman look badass. Let's be real for a moment kids. Aquaman really is a badass. So it's great to show that off in a game that will be seen by a wider audience than just the comic reading crowd. Yes, everyone SHOULD read the comics, but there is still that stigma...that's a story for another day.

So enjoy, let us know what you think in the comments, subscribe. You know the deal!

Stay Classy Puddins

Aliens 30th Anniversary Lootcrate Unboxing

Hi Everyone,

Today our Lootcrate arrived! We have had a subscription in the past, but found that we weren't a fan of all the items so we ended up not continuing, plus the expense to get it here is Australia makes it a bit pricey.
However, about 2 months ago I received an email from Lootcrate telling me that they were doing a one-off, no subscription required Lootcrate packed ENTIRELY with Aliens merch. Since Aliens is my favourite sci-fi, it was basically...

I'm a little obsessed. For example, here's my current Facebook profile photo...note the pulse rifle replica and Colonial Marines t-shirt. Not my only Aliens related shirt either.

So lets go through this Lootcrate, shall we?!

As with any Lootcrate, the inside of the box is printed with something to do with the theme. This time around it was the troop carrier vehicle from the movie (M577 Armored Personnel Carrier - APC).

Then you get the card letting you know what the contents of the box are. It looks like a manilla folder belonging to Burke (BOO!!!) and of course lists all the goodies.

So what did we get?

First things first, you always get a t-shirt and I am SO happy it was this one. The Bugstomper logo is pretty iconic and since I do very regularly quote the pilot (Ferro), the logo from the side of her ship is so awesome for me to now have in shirt form.
Next up, we have a tin sign which to me looks like it is one of the international posters. I'm not so great on my Asian alphabets so I'm not sure which country it is in particular, maybe someone could let me know in the comments?
Regardless of which poster it is, it's awesome. I'm pretty sure we will put this somewhere in the garage where Mat has a Green Lantern tin sign and Futurama tin sign. Truly this is worthy of joining the collection!

Ok, next we have a vinyl figure. I expected a vinyl figure as Crates we've had in the past have always included one, but I did not expect it to be a 6.5" figure! This thing is awesome. It's the Aliens era xenomorph and it's completely glow-in-the-dark. I probably should have charged it up and taken a photo with the lights out to really show this off, but I'm lazy so...
Is it weird that I find this figure really cute?
Then again I do have a plush of this, plus a plush of the facehugger, so no, that's probably not that weird.

ok, moving on! Xenomorph eggs with facehuggers. We received a carton (yep, like an egg carton) of 4 little eggs, some hatched, some intact, with glow-in-the-dark facehuggers included. Now, that would have been really exciting, except these were released in a 6 pack back in December and we already bought those. Whoops. They're still awesome, and our 6 pack of eggs doesn't glow, so that's something different at least.

Last, but certainly not least we have the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Aliens Comic Series from Dark Horse Comics. I'll admit we have an omnibus here and there but not one that looks like this. This is beautiful. Not only is it a hardcover *drools*, but it has this metallic blue colour on the edges of each page. Sort of reminds me of old books.
I'm not sure I'm game to unwrap this from the plastic, it's so pretty, but then I want the stories inside. If I ever get some reading time I might peel the film off this and go for it.

So that's it. That's the Lootcrate.

So was it worth the money, especially since shipping to Australia is costly? As a big fan of the franchise, I say yes. However, if I wasn't that huge a fan, or if I wasn't into comics or vinyl figures, I'd steer clear. That advice really goes for any of these one-off crates that they bring out.

To wrap this up, I might as well throw in the pic of Abby, our German Shepherd, meeting the facehugger for the first time.

Game Over Man, Game Over.

What's In A Name

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post to explain our blogger.com name, i.e. "Daddy Didn't Think This Through".
Mat and I LOVE our obscure references and inside jokes and this is just one that's followed us for a while. This came from an episode of American Dad and we just kept on quoting it so, yeah, it's as simple as that! Still makes us giggle.

Mat and I are working on a couple of other posts at the moment, including one about how we got our two dogs, one about *shudder* Bayformers, and I'm eventually going to put together one on our thoughts about the DC Rebirth event that happened last week.

As always, if you want to comment on any of our posts, feel free to do so, we'd love to hear from you. We now also have figured out how to get the darn subscribe function to work, so if you want to know when we've posted, just pop your email into the box at the top right of the blog page and apparently some magical internet fairies will let you know when there's something new.

Ok, that's all for now.

Clothing Site Of The Month - We Love Fine

First Things First... this is NOT an ad. I haven't been paid to write this, I'm just genuinely a fan.
In case you haven't heard of this site before, let me give you the run down.
This is just as they say in the logo, it's by fans, for fans, which means that while they stock a lot of clothing for different fandoms, they are technically not "licenced" pieces.
That said, one of the great strong points of this site is that they allow artists to submit designs and they can be voted on to create a collection for a given fandom.

We bought a whole lot of t-shirts from them a few months back, but they have become the "site of the month" for their EXCELLENT customer service.

But on to the merch. Here's a few of the pieces we bought.....

For Mat... a lot of Transformers

For Me...
in women's sizes. It's a fitted tee so I go a Medium (i.e. I size up so it fits better).
Got this one in a medium too so I could wear shirts underneath. It's a sheer fabric so...but how AMAZING is this design. I wonder if I could get away with wearing it around the office. Hmmm...

For Connor. Yep, they have Onesies and Kid/Toddler tees.

Sooooooooooo cute!
As you can see, they have some excellent designs. In the case of the Transformers shirts, there are a lot of "obscure references" as we call it in our house, which are the kind of shirts we like. A shirt that only a true fan of the series would fully understand (the sharkticonado shirt with the Quintessons is a perfect example).
Besides the design excellence and the HUGE RANGE, the customer service is unreal.
Mat wore the Sharticonado shirt once and when taking it off it tore around the collar. Not just a little bit, I mean a "no way we can repair this" kind of tear.
So I sent the photos of this (as shown) to the customer service team, just to let them know that they might have gotten a bad batch of shirts. I honestly wasn't expecting anything from them.

To my surprise I got a response within 12 hours which said the following....
"Hi Jamie,
We greatly apologize for the inconvenience, normally replacements/refunds are done if the item is returned within 30 days. We will go ahead and issue a replacement for the damaged item as a one time exception. Since you are located in Australia, the cost of returning will surpass the item cost and is not worth it, please discard the item as you see fit. Once your replacement shirt ships, an email with tracking information will be sent. Please let you know if you have any other questions or concerns, we remain at your service"

Wow. Seriously Wow. Lets face it folks, shipping from the US to Australia at the best of exchange rate times is like US$25-$45, so for them to do that for us was amazing.

For that alone, they deserve this high praise on the interwebs.

ok, enough of my carrying on.

Happy T-shirt shopping my friends!

Jamie :)

Welcome to Australia: land of Torrenters/Pirates

Hi Everyone,

Why I Refuse To Feel Sorry For Torrenting Game Of Thrones

Mat came across this article recently and it perfectly sums up the situation we regularly find ourselves in here in Australia.

You see, we don't get TV shows at the same time as the US, so when a show like Game Of Thrones comes back on, like it did this past week, we need to see it as soon as possible. Either that, or no longer be online until the show comes out on DVD or BluRay (yeah, not gonna happen). Let's face it, people are going to put spoilers online, even if they don't intend them to be spoilers. And that SUCKS if it's a show like GOT.

Because our "free to air" tv is so behind, and FOXTEL (essentially, Australian Cable) is so expensive, AND we don't want our shows spoiled for us, Australia continues to have the record for torrenting/pirating television shows.

I thought maybe those of you overseas would be interested to see what it's like for us here (I know, first world problem, right!) compared to wherever you're situated in the world.

Before I sign off, let me be clear: just like the guy in the article, Mat and I DO buy a helluva lot of BluRays. If we love a show or a film, we gladly purchase. If only the networks would catch up, we'd be watching on TV too, but......

As always, we appreciate any comments on our blog, questions, or even you might like us to review something.

Yarrrr!!!

Clothes Site of the Month

Ok, since Mat has taken to writing HUGE posts, I thought I'd do an entry to even it out a bit.
So, I'm going to start a "site of the month" section of this blog.

LIVING DEAD CLOTHING
www.livingdead.com.au

I've been a purchaser of this site for a while now but recently they have majorly stepped up their geek game.
This site is mainly aimed at women, however they do have a few items for guys as well.

Some of their items are licenced, others they have sort of snuck past the copyright.
I was pretty impressed they secured the Firefly licence, and the items were pretty good. I got the dress below:

Pretty sweet right?

They also have a Simpsons licence, and while I'm a HUGE fan of The Simpsons, I'm not overwhelmed by the art they chose for their pieces.

Ok, so why is this brand so good?

  • Australian Made and Owned (love that)
  • Sizing isn't ridiculous (pretty spot on) and the fabric is both comfy and stretchy
  • Fabric doesn't go see through, especially a plus with leggings
  • The obscure geek pieces (seriously, who remembers Cardcaptors?)
  • Great returns policy
  • They ship internationally
  • The designers have a great sense of humour

Pretty much everyday they have a 24 hour piece. These to me are the most interesting.
There have been some really obscure pieces that while I haven't bought, they have made me giggle.
For example:

And tell me these Marvel pieces aren't bad ass! I missed out on this release sadly

Today I was compelled to write this post, as they released a onesie that I just HAD to have.

I mean, how could I NOT?!
I will be one comfy Super Saiyan this winter. Mmmmmmmm.

As long as they keep making quality geeky clothes, I'll continue buying. So far, so good!

Ok, now bub has woken up, I shall leave it there.

Til next time...

Jamie :)
